Mechanical Engineering 3rd Semester
students, Faculty of Engineering & Technology, (FoET) visited Guru Gobind
Singh Super Thermal Power Plant, Ropar. Starting from the scratch they
got to about the power generation with the coal, they were briefly explained
about the whole procedure of production of electricity starting with unloading
of the coal followed by its crushing procedure, and at last for the final
processing of powered form of coal in the furnace. They visited coal unloaded
section, crusher section (Primary and secondary), furnace section, turbine
& Generator section and CFT plant. This visit helped the students in better
understanding of the thermodynamics cycle’s concepts they are studying in their
current semester.

MOU between GNA University and NIIST on Skill Development & Research
GNA
University and NISST signed an MOU for the upliftment of skills in the steel
based sectors of melting and processing, education and research at GNA
University on November 14, 2015.The MOU was signed between Dr. RK Bagchi,
Director NISST and Dr. Prem Kumar, Vice Chancellor GNA University. The MOU will
help in establishing the skills and filling in the gaps in the state of Punjab,
which has been the objective of both NISST and GNA University, said the Vice
Chancellor Sir. S Gurdeep Singh, the Pro Chancellor expressed his extreme
happiness on signing up of the MOU. He said that the MOU has been very timely
and will open many vistas for the youth of Punjab. Dr. P Thareja, Dean Faculty
of Engineering and Technology recounting the needs of MOU, accented the
shortage of Metallurgical Professionals and how the existing emphasis has
divulged a way to Material Science. Activists of the two organizations were
introduced by Mr. Yogesh Sharma and Dr. R Srivastava. Er. RK Bagchi, Director
NISST expressed hope for the synerization of the two stately knowledgeable
partners for the development of capable professionals. He even accented on the
modernisation of technology vis-a-vis Chinese Model.

GNA University celebrated the 140th birth anniversary of S Vallabh Bhai Patel on October 31, 2015
GNA University celebrated the 140th birth anniversary of S Vallabh Bhai Patel on October 31, 2015. The event was celebrated as a tribute to the Iron Man of India. Students from all the streams delivered presentations, speeches and showed a short documentary film to the GU students, acquainting them about the life history and contribution of this strong leader in the Indian society. Mr Sunil Sarad, the Registrar of the University illumined the minds of the students through a short short from the life of the dynamic personality. S Gurdeep Singh, the Pro Chancellor of the University acknowledged the participants with a small token of love and inspired the students to learn more from the life history of such enigmatic personalities who have been and will be the strong pillars of our Nation. The event was followed by a charitable lunch been prepared by the students of the Hospitality as commemoration to the Iron Man of India.

Poster Exhibition on Gender Discrimination
Violence against women has been
an age old maxim. No doubt, we live in a democratic country, still eradication
of gender discrimination is the need of the hour. Keeping this hot issue in
mind, the Faculty of Languages organized a poster exhibition on gender
discrimination under UGC nominated Gender Champion Club. The students from all
the streams exhibited their views and ideas on gender sensitizing issues like
female foeticide, female infanticide, female harassment and domestic violence
as some of the burning issues prevalent in our Indian society. S Gurdeep Singh,
the Pro- Chancellor of the University, was over whelmed to see the hard
endeavors been put on the posters on violence against women. He is hopeful that
in the times to come our GU students would act as a strong pillar of support to
eradicate this routed evil from our society. Dr. Disha Khanna, head of Faculty
of Languages thanked the worthy Pro-Chancellor for inspiring the students to
unleash their latent feelings related to gender discrimination.

Getting Started: A Research Initiative at GNA University

University organized an FDP on “Getting
Started: Research: An
Introduction” October 24, 2015. Dr. Govinder Flora, Dean Academics,
highlighted the need of research in teaching and learning process. He apprised
the faculty members as how they can start with research in their respective
areas of interest. He believed that one should take research to get solution to
a problem, generation of new knowledge and explanation of new phenomenon.
He also explained various types of research
viz. fundamental, applied, primary and secondary, that the research process
should be deeply taken into consideration bypassing Plagiarism asit leads to
withdrawal, reprimand and ineligibility. He emphasized that the best way to
begin in the field of research is to undertake some reading. He also threw
light on how to seek grants for research. Dr. Prem Kumar, Vice- Chancellor, GNA
University emphasized that learning at GU is project oriented and teaching
is research oriented by highlighting some of his real life experiences. S
Gurdeep Singh, Pro Chancellor strongly announced that GNA University is always
ready to fund young researchers in unleashing their research talent.
